About this place

Sofá dos Poios viewpoint Most viewpoints give you a railing and a panorama. Sofá dos Poios gives you something better: an actual seat. A large concrete armchair — the sofá — is installed right at the edge of the viewpoint, built into the landscape so you can sit down, lean back, and take in the mountain scenery like it was designed for exactly that. Because it was. Perched above the tiny mountain village of Poios, near Redinha in the Pombal municipality, this is one of those quiet local gems that doesn't appear on tourist maps but immediately makes sense the moment you arrive. Someone thought: this view deserves more than a quick stop. So they built a place to sit. The Viewpoint 🪑 The Sofá Experience: • A large concrete armchair built directly into the viewpoint terrace — unique in the region • Elevated position above the village of Poios with wide open views across the surrounding serra landscape • Forested ridgelines, deep valleys, cultivated pockets of land far below • The kind of silence that only exists at altitude, away from main roads • Zero infrastructure — no café, no ticket, no crowd. Just the chair and the view. The Surroundings 🏔️ Serra do Poio Context: Poios sits within a landscape that rewards slow exploration. The village itself is tiny and traditional — stone walls, terraced plots, the kind of place that feels untouched. The wider Serra do Poio area is rich in points of interest: the nearby Capela de Nossa Senhora da Estrela, a medieval chapel built into a natural limestone cave just minutes away, makes a natural pairing with Sofá dos Poios. Visit both and you have a morning well spent. The limestone escarpment of the serra is known to climbers, the valley below carved by the Anços river has its own trails and biodiversity station, and human presence in the area traces back to the Palaeolithic. This is old, layered land. For Cyclists 🚴 Location & Access: • Village of Poios, near Redinha, Pombal municipality, central Portugal • Distance from Pombal: ~12–15 km • Distance from Coimbra: ~45–50 km • Access: Narrow mountain road through Poios village — paved but tight • Bike types: Gravel and MTB ideal; road bikes possible on a clean dry day 🗺️ Route Context: • Natural final destination on climbing routes from Redinha or Pombal • Pairs perfectly with Capela da Estrela — both sites sit within the same ridge area, easy to combine in a single loop • Good midpoint on longer serra traversals connecting Pombal, Ansião, and the mountain villages • The descent back to Redinha rewards the climb handsomely Why It Belongs on the Map ✅ Unique installation — a concrete armchair viewpoint, genuinely one of a kind ✅ Panoramic mountain views — wide open serra landscape in every direction ✅ Zero crowds — completely off the tourist trail ✅ Perfect photo stop — the sofá + mountain backdrop is an irresistible composition ✅ Natural pairing with Capela da Estrela — two hidden gems, one route ✅ Free and always accessible — no hours, no fees Perfect for: Cyclists looking for a quirky and memorable summit reward, photographers chasing an unusual composition, anyone who wants to sit in a mountain armchair and stare at the horizon for ten minutes before the descent. Practical Notes 🎒 What to Bring: Water, snacks — nothing available on site. Camera — the sofá photo is obligatory. Layers — elevated and exposed, wind picks up fast. 🌤️ Best Times: Spring and autumn for clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Early morning for solitude and soft light on the mountains. 🗺️ Find Sofá dos Poios and other hidden cycling destinations on our Bike Universe Community map! Join our next tour!
