Bike UniverseA beautiful historic stone bridge over the Alva River and a great starting point for the challenging cycling climb from Sandomil to Torre, the highest point in mainland Portugal.
About this place
Ponte Romana de Sandomil is a picturesque historic stone bridge crossing the Alva River in the village of Sandomil, near Seia.
Although traditionally known as a Roman bridge, the present structure is believed to be of medieval origin, possibly built on the site of an earlier Roman crossing. With its stone arches, granite paving and beautiful setting beside the clear waters of the Alva River, it is one of the most charming landmarks in the area.
For cyclists, Sandomil has another special significance: this is a great starting point for the long and challenging climb towards Torre in Serra da Estrela โ the highest point in mainland Portugal at 1,993 metres.
It makes the bridge a perfect place to begin a memorable mountain ride: enjoy the historic surroundings, take a few photos by the river, and then start climbing towards the roof of mainland Portugal. ๐ด โฐ๏ธ
