About this place

As the largest in the chain of lagoons nestled between the pine forests and the Atlantic dunes, Lagoa da Vela is a magnificent expanse of freshwater that offers a sense of immense scale and tranquility. Its name, meaning "Sail Lagoon," perfectly captures its open, airy character. The highlight of the location is the beautifully designed wooden viewpoint (miradouro) that extends directly over the water. From here, you can observe a rich variety of birdlife and enjoy the panoramic reflection of the surrounding forest in the mirror-like surface of the lake. The area is dotted with picnic spots and shaded paths, making it a central hub for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful escape. Our Experience (A Recurring Highlight!): We’ve been here many times during our bike tours, and it’s always one of the most appreciated stops. Standing on the wooden platform right above the water gives you a unique perspective on the lake's vastness. It’s the perfect place for a group photo or a longer rest to soak in the serene atmosphere before hitting the trails again. Important for Bike Travelers! ⚠️ • The Access: The lagoon is easily accessible from the main routes between Quiaios and Tocha. The roads leading here are mostly flat and take you through some of the most scenic pine-scented forest paths in the region. • Rest & Refuel: With its dedicated rest areas and picnic tables, it’s one of the best spots to enjoy a lunch break. The shade of the trees provides a welcome relief during the heat of a summer ride. • Birdwatching: If you have a set of binoculars in your pack, this is the place to use them. The lagoon is a vital habitat for many protected species. • Trail Connectivity: Lagoa da Vela serves as a great navigation point—from here, you can easily connect to the smaller lagoons like Lagoa Salgueira or head towards the ocean. Why it’s a Hidden Gem: • It’s the grandest freshwater experience in the central coastal region. • The wooden boardwalk and viewpoint offer a modern, clean, and accessible way to enjoy raw nature. • It’s a perfect blend of wild biodiversity and traveler comfort.
