About this place

Located in the scenic Stryiskyi Park in Lviv, Ukraine, the Jan Kiliński Monument is a historic stone statue erected in 1895 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Kościuszko Insurrection. It honors Jan Kiliński (1760–1819), a master shoemaker and national hero who bravely led the citizens of Warsaw during the 1794 Warsaw Uprising. Design and Craftsmanship Designed and sculpted by the prominent Ukrainian-Polish sculptor Julian Markowski, the statue is carved from local Trembowla sandstone. It depicts Kiliński in traditional 18th-century attire, holding a sabre high in his right hand and a banner in his left, symbolizing leadership and civic bravery. The statue rests upon a rugged, natural-style rock pedestal inscribed with his name and historic dates. Historical Significance Created during the Austro-Hungarian period for the landmark General National Exhibition in Lviv, the monument holds significant cultural value as one of the earliest public tributes to Kiliński. Today, it remains a notable architectural highlight nestled within the lower paths of Stryiskyi Park.
