About this place

Located in the historic village of Pereira, in the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho, the Igreja da Misericórdia de Pereira and its adjoining Casa do Despacho form an impressive architectural ensemble dating back to the 18th century. Dedicated to Our Lady of Piety (Nossa Senhora da Piedade), the present Baroque church was built beginning in 1729, on the site of an earlier chapel. Its elegant façade, richly decorated entrance, clock tower and distinctive architectural details make it one of the village's most remarkable historic landmarks. Inside, the church preserves beautiful gilded wooden altarpieces and traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles produced in Coimbra during the 18th century. The decorative panels depict scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The adjoining Casa do Despacho, historically associated with the local Misericórdia brotherhood, adds further architectural and cultural significance to the complex. The entire ensemble has been officially protected as a Property of Public Interest since 1978. For cyclists exploring the countryside between Coimbra and Montemor-o-Velho, this is a wonderful cultural stop. Take a moment to admire the beautiful façade, discover a piece of Portuguese history and capture some memorable photographs. A hidden architectural gem worth discovering during your next cycling adventure through central Portugal!
