With its massive iron wheels, horizontal boiler and tall chimney, this fascinating piece of engineering history is an unexpected roadside discovery and a great photo stop for cyclists exploring the Silver Coast.
About this place
Hidden in the town of Pataias, along Portugal's beautiful Silver Coast, this unusual historic-looking steam machine is one of those unexpected discoveries that make cycling adventures so interesting.
At first glance, it looks like a miniature steam locomotive or an early steam-powered vehicle. However, its design closely resembles a portable steam engine, also known as a locomobile — a type of machinery historically used in agriculture and industry.
These machines generated steam power to operate equipment such as threshing machines, pumps and other mechanical systems. Unlike railway locomotives, many portable steam engines were not self-propelled. Their wheels allowed them to be transported between different working locations.
The machine in Pataias features a large horizontal boiler, a tall black chimney, heavy iron wheels and impressive mechanical details. Its dark metal construction creates a striking contrast with the surrounding modern buildings.
Although the exact manufacturer, age and history of this particular machine remain unknown, its appearance offers a fascinating glimpse into the era of steam-powered engineering.
We discovered this remarkable piece of machinery during our 177 km MTB and gravel cycling adventure to São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré. It was a completely unexpected find and definitely worth stopping for a photograph!
For cyclists exploring Pataias and the surrounding region, this is an unusual roadside attraction that adds a little industrial history to the journey.
Please note that the machine is displayed beside a building and may be on private property. Enjoy the view and take photographs only from publicly accessible areas.
An unexpected encounter with the age of steam — right in the heart of Portugal's Silver Coast!
